Chapter Nine
Tanner
Takashiro was a gifted orator. When he peeled aside the doors of Wulfric Manor, there was something about him that always left Tanner’s visitors weak at the knees. He was the type of man who could not, and would not, be broken. He moved with a particular grace that shifters could only ever hope to achieve, and the butler relished in knowing that, despite his loyal and formidable approach to all things concerning his master.
But most of all, Takashiro knew how to deliver a memorable impression. In much earlier years, Tanner had often delighted in watching the arrogance slip away from his guests’ faces the moment they stepped foot over the threshold and were greeted by the butler. Takashiro never broke rank, never lost his composure, never broke—period.
However, that morning, he seemed oddly out of sorts when he came bursting into Tanner’s study; interrupting a very important monthly meeting. It was late January, and it had been raining torrentially the night before, and still the raindrops lashed down the long, circular windows of Wulfric Manor, and into the drainpipes. But it wasn’t the rain, or the sight of Takashiro’s exasperated face that caught Tanner’s attention. It was Sebastian’s incinerating, wet gaze stabbing into him from across his study which caused the hybrid to straighten in his high-backed, leather chair.
“Sir, please forgive me. I insisted that he visited at another time, as you were already engaged, but…”
Tanner raised a hand, and the room fell deathly silent.
“Gentleman” —he stood up and addressed his three Underground associates who looked mildly startled by the disruption— “if you would excuse me for a moment. It seems I have other business to attend to. Takashiro, see to it that refreshments are brought to our clients immediately. Anything else they desire, bring it to them.” He stopped next to Sebastian and whispered into his upturned ear: “You… Outside.”
For a moment, he didn’t think the vampire would obey him. But then he felt the whoosh of Sebastian pivoting on his heel, and he swept by Takashiro’s bowing figure and down the long, ebony hallway after his master. Opening the library door, Sebastian followed Tanner into the dimly lit room. But, before the door even closed, Sebastian slapped him across the face with the back of his hand; red hot pain searing across his clean-shaven face. For a split second, Tanner was utterly dumbstruck. It wasn’t a punch, or even a kick, which he might’ve respected, but a slap? As though he were some cheap slut down the Pits?
Tanner smirked and wiped his mouth with the side of his hand. He could taste blood dripping between his teeth, his mouth instantly swelling along the seam of his lips. So my little vampire’s discovered my plan after all, hmm?
“Who the fuck do you think you are?” In one invisibly quick movement, Tanner lunged at Sebastian’s throat and pinned him against the nearest table. Books and stationery gave way around them, lamp shades and candles scattered over the tiled floor.
